industrializationof soybeaninMatoGrosso
In Mato Grosso, everything is character-
ized by exponential growth. The develop-
ment of soybean production in geometric
progression and the difficulty in transport-
ing the crop induced the State to speed up
the creation of an industrial park for process-
ing the kernel. These factories, in pursuit of
profitability and lowcost, gave rise topigand
poultry farming operations, for which soy-
beanandcornaremajor feed inputs.
Thebiggestindustrialparkofthesoybean
supply chain in Brazil is based in Mato Gros-
so. And the main industries, too. For logistic
reasons, so as to facilitate transportation, the
South and Mid-North regions are the main
references in the State. “Soybeanwill contin-
ue driving the economy. Now, it is up to us to
offer every condition for the animal protein
produced here manages to reach new mar-
kets, generatingmore resources to theState”,
comments the secretary of Economic Devel-
opment, RicardoTomczyk.
Estimates indicate that Mato Grosso still
possesses from 10 to 12 million hectares of
degraded pastureland suitable for the culti-
vationofsoybeanandcorn.Furthermore,the
government has it that the crop-livestock in-
tegration system is viable on the farms, thus
producingmoremeat insmaller areas.
The Agricultural Policy secretary of the
Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food
Supply (Mapa), Neri Geller, who is also a soy-
bean producer in Mato Grosso, maintains
that the State is one of the only ones inBrazil
where the migratory movement is reversed.
“People migrate from big cities, or from the
capital city, to the countryside, where prog-
ress is taking place. And, as agribusiness is
bound to evolve considerably over the next
years, this situationshouldhold”, he stresses.
The municipality of Lucas do Rio Verde
is probably one of the best examples of this
transformation. The village, which originat-
ed from a settlement, got its emancipation
in 1988. Due to the high performance of its
soybean fields, the municipality managed
to consolidate its social and economic evo-
lution. Seven years ago, the Gross Domes-
tic Product (GDP) of the town acquired giant
proportionswith the arrival of BRF, a compa-
ny. Now, theper capitaGDPof themunicipal-
ity is in excess of R$ 50 thousand and the il-
literacy rate is a bit higher than 3%. “People
fromall over Brazil began tomigrate toLucas
do Rio Verde. What happens there equally
happens in other municipalities throughout
all the regions”, Geller reiterates
