G
lobal textile industry’s de-
mand for cotton in the
2017/18 season should out-
strip production for the
third year in row, according
to a survey by the International Cotton
Advisory Committee (ICAC). According
to this organ, world consumption should
go up 2%, jumping to 24.6 million tons,
keeping pace with the global economic
growth throughout 2017 and 2018.
Despite the competition from syn-
thetic fabrics, the industry in China is
supposed to use 1 percent more cotton,
reaching 7.7 million tons, represent-
ing 30% of global consumption. After
the 3-percent reduction, to 5.1 million
tons in the 2016/17 crop year, the con-
sumption in India is likely to recover 2
percent, to a total of 5.2 million tons.
This results from the competitive prices
fetched by that country’s cotton prod-
ucts, along with the expansion of their
capacity and the solution to the conse-
quences stemming from the demoneti-
zation of the country’s currency.
In Pakistan, the use of cotton by the
transformation industry should go up
1%, totaling 2.3 million tons, thanks to
the incentives awarded to textile ex-
ports offered by the local government.
Bangladesh is going to experience a
more fearless growth of 5% to a total of
1.5 million tons. This will turn the Asian
country into the fourth biggest consum-
er in the 2017/18 season. The optimism
of the supply chain lies in the expecta-
tion for remunerative prices at cotton
and textile sales.
