jumping to 69.6 million
tons. It will be the second
year in a rowwith produc-
tion on the rise, after the period of stagnation
from2013 to 2015. Substantial production in-
creases have been taking place in the Unit-
ed States and Brazil, but other countries that
are likely to experience increases are Argenti-
na, China and the European Union. Beef pro-
duction is supposed to drop in Australia, New
Zealand and Russia, according to a report re-
leased by the Food and Agriculture Organiza-
tionoftheUnitedNations(FAO).
In LatinAmerica and in the Caribbean, the
gains are associated with better climate con-
ditions,aftertwoseasonsinwhichElNiñotrig-

conditions in many regions. In 2017, the cli-
mate, in general, looks more favorable. In
Brazil, the past seasons of good international
businesses encouraged cattle farmers to ex-
pand their herds, in spiteofmoderatedomes-
ticdemand. “Production is supposed togoup

In Mercosur, production in Argentina
soared 4.2 percent, to a total of 2.8 million
tons,inUruguayonlyslightincreasesoccurred
and inParaguay slaughter rates remained un-
changed. In Asia, China ismaking a difference
inbeefproduction,withanincreaseof1.4per-
cent in the season, to 7.1 million tons. Stable
domestic prices invited investments in cattle
farming,whilethesmallmarginsfromthepro-
ductionofmilk should encourage the farmers

Africa has shown no changes to its con-
trasting scenario. The precarious conditions
of their pasturelands, especially inKenya, So-
malia, Ethiopia and Tanzania, due to errat-
ic rainfalls, will have a negative impact upon
the cattle herds and slaughter rates. Never-
theless, in the South of the continent there
will be increases in production in countries
like Malawi, South Africa and Zambia, where
abundant seasonal rainfalls occurred, along
with good pasturelands and healthy herds
no longer affected by any drought condi-
tions. This will boost the domestic demand
of these countries.
TheUnitedStateswill produce the biggest

5.1 percent, due to an increase in the slaugh-
ter rate and carcass weight. In Canada, there

In
Oceania, the cycle is devoted to the recon-
struction of the herds. Therefore, Australia
should experience a 3-percent fall in produc-
tion, reaching no more than 2 million tons of
beef. In New Zealand, slaughter rates tend to
drop and availability of beef will go down 4.5
percent,to588thousandtons.Thehigherpric-
es fetchedbymilk sloweddown the slaughter
rates,whichhadbeenonariseinthepasttwo
seasons. As forRussia, this countrywill reduce
by 2 percent the supply of beef in 2017, to 1.6
million tons. Low profitability rates discour-
aged investments and reduced the size of the
herds. In global terms, FAO officials are pro-

2018, depending on the climate and the indi-
vidualscenarioofthecountries.
will be hardly any increase, as this country is
rebuilding its herd, with an expected produc-
tionofaround1.2milliontonsofbeef.
