Brazilian foreign sales of beef
amounted to 1.3 million tons
and US$ 5.3 billion in 2016, down 1 percent
in volume and 7 percent in value, according
to the Association of Brazilian Beef Export-
ers (Abiec). The entity comprises 30 export-
ing companies, and they are responsible for
90 percent of all beef traded abroad. “Reve-
nue receded due to the falling exchange rate
scenarioand the local problems in important
Brazilianbeef importingmarkets, likeRussia,
VenezuelaandEgypt”,saysAntônioJorgeCa-
mardelli, president of theAbiec.
From January to June 2017, beef ship-
ments reached a total of 781.307 thousand
tons and US$ 3.181 billion, down 5 percent
in volume and up 1 percent in revenue from
the results achieved in the same months in
the previous year. Revenue over the period
took advantage of the average price of US$
4,072 per ton of beef, up 6 percent from the
average value practiced in the same period
in 2016. On the grounds of these numbers
and other factors, Abiec officials had esti-
mated that beef exports would achieve sim-
ilar levels to 2016. “We have several positive
factors, which should benefit shipments, but
we equally had some negative news, which
slightly impacted upon the results in the first
half of 2017”, saysCamardelli.
The president of Abiecmaintains that the
sector had expected positive results with the
chancetofinditswayintonewmarkets,such
as Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Tai-
wanandIndonesia.“TheUnitedStatesisalso
thefocusofattention”,headds.Inspiteofthe
removal of fivemeat packing plants fromthe
list of qualified and accepted fresh meat ex-
porters to the North-American market. “We
hope to boost our share in the annual quo-
taavailabletoBrazilandothercountries”,ob-
servedCamardelli.
