The domesticmarket is themain destination of
allsoybeanoilproducedinBrazil.Thetotalamount
of 8.074million tons produced in 2015 outstripped
all the volumes of the previous years. With regard
to the2014production, it increasedby 8.2%, or 631
thousandtons,accordingtodatafromtheBrazilian
VegetableOil IndustriesAssociation (Abiove). There
is a vast potential for increasing the production of
oil andmeal, as Brazilian industrializes only 41%of
the soybean crop, the entity clarifies.
Domestic consumption of oil amounted to
6.521 million tons in 2015, up 412 thousand tons
from the 6.109 million tons consumed in the pre-
vious year. Abiove officials had estimated a 2-per-
cent reduction in the consumption of oil by hu-
mansin2015.Thecompensationcameintheform
of theproductionof averyhighvolumeof biodies-
el. The average price of soybean oil in the domes-
ticmarket soared12.9%, compared to theaverage
prices practiced in 2014, concluded the analysis
focused on 2015, conducted by the Center for Ap-
plied Studies on Advanced Economics (Cepea), of
the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (Esalq),
linked to theUniversity of São Paulo (USP).
Exports of soybean oil (crude and refined)
amounted to 1.665 million tons, up 29% from
the 1.295 million tons shipped in previous years,
the Country has exported bigger volumes. Aver-
age annual shipments reached 2.3 million tons
in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Foreign sales brought
in revenue of US$ 1.154 billion in 2015, less than
US$ 1.13 billion in the previous year. A ton of the
product fetched an average price of US$ 691 in
2015, lower than the price of US$ 866 practiced in
the previous year. However, in national currency,
the oil was sold abroad for an average price of R$
2,033.99 per ton, up 7.6%.
ASIAN ROUTES
Asia accounted for 81%
of all soybean oil exported by Brazil in 2015. Im-
ports by India represented 60% of the total; China’s
imports, 16%, say Abiove sources. India acquired
814.577thousandtonsatthecostofUS$551.863mil-
lion. Shipments to China reached 205.247 thousand
tons,bringinginrevenueofUS$139.028million.The
thirdbiggestpurchaseofsoybeanoilwaseffectedby
Bangladesh,totaling154.548thousandtonsandrev-
enue of US$ 104.963million. The rest of the volume
wassenttoAfricanandAmericancountries.
The states of Paraná, Mato Grosso and Rio
Grande do Sul were the leading soybean oil ex-
porters in 2015. Shipments in Paraná amounted to
758.327 thousand tons, bringing in revenue of US$
527.680million,fromdatareleasedbytheSecretar-
iatofForeignTrade(Secex),oftheMinistryofDevel-
opment, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC). Mato
Grosso shipped 377.478 thousand tons, equivalent
to US$ 265.47million. Businesses in Rio Grande do
Sultotaled317.028thousandtonsandUS$212.386
million. Rather smaller performances were regis-
tered in Goiás, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Minas
Gerais,MatoGrossodoSul, amongother states.

The production of soybean oil could reach 8million tons in 2016, representing a reduction of 0.6%
from the previous year. On 29th September, Abiove officials disclosed the new estimate for 2016 and
the first projection for 2017. Domestic consumption was estimated at 6.5 million tons, representing
a reduction of 21 thousand tons, and exports of 45 million tons, down 3.3%. For 2017, the projection
is for a rise of 1.3% in production and 4% in domestic consumption. The forecast for rising consump-
tion took into consideration the bigger percentage of themixture of biodiesel withmineral diesel from
B7to B8 – that is to say, amixture of 8%biodiesel with commonmineral diesel sold around the Coun-
try. As to soybean oil exports, they are supposed to drop by 6.9% in 2017.
