Soaring biodiesel production has been
expanding the processing of soybean ker-
nels and the amounts of soybean oil pro-
duced inBrazil. Some2.7million tonsof soy-
beanoil weredestined for theproductionof
biodiesel in 2015, from figures released by
the Brazilian Vegetable Oil Industries Asso-
ciation (Abiove). In all, 8.074 million tons of
oil were produced in 2015, of which 6.521
million tons were absorbed by the domes-
tic market and 1.665 million tons were for
exports. With the exception of shipments
abroad, all other results hit recordnumbers.
Brazil produced 3.9 billion liters of 2015,
up 15% from 2014, according to data re-
leased by the National Agency of Petro-
leum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).
Since 2005, when only 736 thousand li-
ters were manufactured, production has
been rising. Soybean oil accounted for
77% of the total produced in 2015, but was
once as high as 80%. The other raw mate-
Nice
ils
rials utilized were beef tallow (19.3%), fat-
ty oils (0.43%), cotton seed (2%) and other
products (0.97%).The Center-West region
accounted for 44%of the volumemanufac-
tured in the Country, followedby the South
regions (39%) and the Southeast (7%).
Bigger supplies of biodiesel and the
5-percent drop in the consumption of die-
sel contributed towards the reduction of
38% of fossil diesel imports in 2015, com-
pared to the previous year. Therefore,
the share of imported diesel in the total
amounts of biofuels negotiated by Bra-
zil drop from 19% in 2014 to 12% in 2015.
On average, in 2015, the price of diesel S-10
to the refinery was R$ 2.04 per liter, down
6.4% fromthe price paid to themills, which
remained at R$ 2.18 per liter.
Although production has been close to
the 4 billion liters in 2015, the national in-
dustry has an installed capacity for the pro-
duction of 7.3 billion liters a year, according
todata releasedby theANP. This attests that
Brazil could, immediately, increase the mix-
ing of biodiesel to, at least, B12 (12%). Now,
inBrazil themandatory blend is 7%biodies-
el to diesel. In 2017, it will go up to 8%, and
until March 2019, it will be a mixing of 10%.
Captive fleetsandhuge roadwayconsumers
are authorized to a B20 mixing, and agricul-
tural, industrial and railway consumers are
allowed to a 30-percentmixture.
“Soybean alone offers enough raw ma-
terial to meet demand, but production di-
versification is needed. To this end, we
should improve our technical competenc-
es, with more investments in technology
and research”, says Donato Aranda, techni-
cal consultant at the Brazilian Union of Bio-
diesel andBiokerosene (Ubrabio).
Brazil registered the second largest con-
sumption of biodiesel (3.9 billion liters) in
the world in 2015. The performance took
advantage, for the most part, of the change
that determined the shareof 7%biodiesel in
the total volume of diesel negotiated in the
Country. The biggest global consumer was
the United States, with 5.6 billion liters. In
Germany, 2.4 billion liters were consumed,
followed by Argentina (1.1 billion liters).
Country has the capacity to
produce 7.3 billion liters of
biodiesel a year
