FOREIGN POTENTIAL
About 3.5% of the entire production in Pará is shipped abroad, but it is possi-
ble to expand this portion, says Geraldo Tavares, Fruticulture manager at Sedap.
From 2014 to 2015, exports in Pará were on the rise, reaching R$ 64.6 million and R$
93.7 million, respectively, but in 2016 there was a decline in the volume of exports,
caused by smaller purchases by Japan. Themain importers in 2016 were the United
States (55.77%), Japan (14.24%) and Australia (10.24%). In 2017, relying on informa-
tion available in early 2018, sales abroad are believed to have risen again.
Tavares has it that “the açaí is one of the few fruits at global level with a huge
but unexplored market, which translates into great demand left unattended”. His
conclusion stems from the consideration that only three countries concentrate
the biggest volume of Brazilian exports, while massive promotion of the Brazilian
product in the European and Asian markets has so far been neglected (except in
the Japanesemarket). Particularly in Asia, he ascertains that “China is an immense
market that is worth pursuing”.
