Fruit sales inallmajor DistributionCenters
(Ceasas) throughout the Country went up in
2017, but revenue did not keep pacewith this
rising trend, suggesting smaller prices. The to-
tal volume of fruit sales amounted to 4.816
million tons, up 447.440 thousand tons from
the volume negotiated in 2016. In revenue,
theresultofthesalesattheCeasasreachedR$
12.894billionin2017,representinganincrease
ofR$171.770million.Thesedataaresurveyed
by the Brazilian Horticultural Market Mod-
ernization Program (Prohort), of the National
FoodSupplyAgency(Conab).
The Prohort/Conab database is viewed as
the biggest and the most comprehensive in
theCountry,gettinginformationfrom117fruit
varieties, from the different Brazilian regions.
Conab, through the Prohort Bulletin Horticul-
turalSalesintheDistributionCenters,publish-
esamonthlyanalysisonthebehaviorofprices
andvolumesoffruitsandvegetablescommer-
cializedinallmajorCeasasacrosstheCountry,
furnishedbythecentersthemselves..
Prices and their variations can be ac-
cessed at the Prohort/Conab site, through
the InformationSystemon theBrazilianSup-
ply Markets (Simab) and in the Horticultur-
al Bulletin. Through this system, it is possi-
ble to check the history of price variations for
thespecifiedperiod.“Onecanhaveagraspof
the example set by the apple, which, in 2016,
registered a crop shortfall that resulted into
stable average prices above the levels of the
previous year and higher compared to 2017”,
explainseconomistErickdeBritoFarias,mar-
ketanalystandmanager atConab’sHorticul-
turalMarketModernizationprogram.
Five fruits alone accounted formore than
half of the total sales in 2017. Together, or-
anges, bananas, papayas, apples and water-
melons amounted to a total of 2.629 million
tons in 2017, higher than the 2.447 million

the biggest volume, with 778,151 thousand
tons, the only one that receded in compar-
ison to the amount traded in 2016. Banana
sales reached 606.956 thousand tons, fol-
lowed by 449.909 thousand tons of papaya,

thousand tons of watermelons. The species
that came next were pineapples, mangoes,
lemons, tangerines, melons, coconut, pas-
sion fruit,pears,grapes,avocadosandothers.
The main fruit supplier is the State of São
Paulo, with a share of 31% of the volume,
where the highlights are oranges, lemons and
watermelons. The States of Bahia and Minas
Geraishadashareof11%involume,each.The
most available fruits in Bahia were papayas,
mangoes and bananas; and in Minas Gerais,
bananas and pineapples. These states are
followed by Espírito Santo (8%), Pernambu-
co (7%) and imported items (5%). The states
of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do
SulandSantaCatarinasupplied4%,each.The
shares of the other states are as follows: Ser-
gipe(3%),Goiás(2%)andRiodeJaneiro(2%).
