Pure
beauty
Marked by diversity and by the ever-rising levels of quality
at production and industrialization, fruit farming inBrazil
conquers the hearts and palates all over theworld
the national production in distant mar-
kets. The Country is a player in the trade
of all species that are consumed regularly,
like bananas, apples, melons, mangoes,
pineapples, oranges, lemons, watermel-
ons, grapes, among others, but also sup-
plies fruit of diverse exotic profile, particu-
larly fruit from the Amazon region.
Tens of regional belts, from North to
South and East to West, drive the develop-
ment with the recipe generated by the fruit
trade. Thus, from the temperate climate in
the states of South Brazil to the tropical en-
vironment in the vast areas in the South-
east, North andNortheast, every year about
44 million tons of fruit are harvested and
placed in the market: a great deal of them,
or course, reach the dinner table fresh, but
industrialization is rapidly gaining momen-
tum, in the formof juices, pulp, sweets anda
seriesofotherusesandpreparations.There-
fore, the fruit impart color, flavor and health
to people of all ages, and drive the econ-
omy. The
Brazilian Fruit Yearbook 2018
features details of the reality of the pro-
duction, market and perspectives of the
species with the biggest share in the culti-
vation environment, besides dimension-
ing the investments carried out by the sec-
tor. It becomes evident that the fostering
and research organisms are lending an im-
portant contribution to leverage the sector
even further, with the introduction of vari-
eties adapted to the intentions and reality
of the production in several different areas.
This leads to the expectation that fruit
farming will continue playing an increasing-
ly important role for the generation of jobs
and income, both in small-scale farms and
big commercial operations. Fruit farming
does not only provide for flavor and health,
but exerts a strong positive impact from a
social and environmental point of view.

There is noway to think about quality of
life without the presence of fruit in our ev-
eryday life. As they provide indispensable
nutrients for the body, regular consumption
of different fruit should be a constant con-
cern.And,inthiscase,Brazilianstakeadvan-
tage of a very special situation: few nations
have access, through internal supplies, to a
diversityof fruit that excel inquality, as is the
case of Brazil.
Currently, tens of species are usually
available at fruit stands, fairs, cafeterias and
supermarkets. Seeing that in the different
national regions cultivation and harvest are
possible all year round, these fruit also reach
thepopulationat affordableprices. That is to
say, all over the year, it is possible to provide
for a richandbalancedmeal toall people.
It is not only people’s health that takes
advantage of the valuable contribution
coming from fruit. As far as the local econ-
omy goes, they exert a very special role,
through the creation of jobs and income,
mainly through ever-rising shipments
abroad. Brazilian fruit are increasingly
conquering the heart and palate of con-
sumers around the world, whilst industri-
alization has equally been a way to insert
