seems to be getting sweeter in the 2016/17
growing season. The largest global produc-
er and exporter of this food, produced from
sugarcane in the Country, is now expand-
ing the volume of its supply, after years of
reductions. These are the projections for
the new crop year, and they confirmed in
the first quarter of the year. This fact has to
do with the new reality of the market, which
had left no doubt in late 2015, mainly due
to falling global supply of the product and
the consequent higher prices.
The increase of the Brazilian produc-
tion volumes could reach upwards of 10%.
Judging from the projection by the Nation-
al Food Supply Agency (Conab), released in
April 2016, there could be a 12-percent in-
crease. Therefore, the volume would jump
from 37.5 million tons to reach a total close
to the levels achieved in the 2010/11 growing
season, something like 38 million tons. The
main motivating factor is the price, which
was R$ 83.94 at the sugar mills in São Pau-
