Mechanization
The transformations on the activi-
ty equally go through the mechaniza-
tion of some operations. Now, seed-
ling transplanting in the field is carried
out through a small machine known as
“saraquá”, very similar to manual ma-
chines for planting grains. Besides trac-
tors andother farmimplements, like spe-
cific transplanting machines and even
equipment for mechanized tobacco har-
vesting are getting common in some ar-
eas. According to SindiTabaco president
Iro Schünke, nowadays the companies
are trying to come up with the best alter-
natives for making it viable for the small
farmers to acquire machinery, as it repre-
sents a high cost for small-scale farms.
“If labor continues in short supply, there is need for coming up with solutions. Technology exists, for both planting and har-
vesting operations, but we still have to find a way to make it viable in the small holdings that produce tobacco”, he argues. In the
realm of innovations, the official recalls systems that have already been consolidated, like new curing barns that make handling
easier and facilitate the control of moisture levels and temperature. And, in the productive areas, the use of irrigation is no longer
a novelty and widens the chances for promising results, even under adverse climate conditions.
