F
irst and only country in the world qualified to certify the production of tobac-
co, Brazil is making a step forward to ensure the future of its hegemony in the
global market: the gradual adherence to the compliance standards set forth
by the Integrated Tobacco Production System (ITPS) of theMinistry of Agricul-
ture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa).
It is aprocedure standardizedby theBraziliangovernment, internationally acknowl-
edged, to produce tobacco in a safemanner, with little environmental impact, more so-
cial responsibility and traceability.

rules”, explains agronomist and technical advisor to the Interstate Tobacco Industry Union (SindiTabaco), Darci José da Silva. Legisla-
tion is in force since 2014, and in 2015 and 2016 the companies that have adhered to the process acquired their first lots produced un-
der these standards, among them the best agricultural, environmental and social practices.
The number of producers participating in the 2016/17 growing season went up by almost 350%, from 145 to 537 registered
Compliance with the acknowledged global standards will make the difference
farmers. Adhesion is on a voluntary basis and the standards are very strict, and the
same holds true for auditing. With the certification, it is possible to attest to every
processing step to the final consumer, through formal and auditable records, in-
cluding a label approved by the National Institute of Metrology, Standardization
and Industrial Quality (Inmetro). The most discerning markets will use compliance
with these procedures as commercial barriers in the near future, say international
market specialists.
Two groups of technical responsible personnel, agronomic and agricultural en-
gineers and agricultural technicians, have already been duly qualified to audit the
compliance of these processes and products with the legal requirements. New
groups will start in 2017.
