ith a market of approxi-
mately R$ 1.2 million, the
Brazilian tropical forage
sectorhasgrownyearafter
year andnowaccounts for
11percent of the revenue earnedby the sector
of seeds in the Country, coming only after soy-
bean and corn. There are around 800 farmers
registeredintheNationalRegisterofSeedsand
Seedlings (Renasem), which reinforces the im-
portance of the supply chain for the economy.
More than 90 percent of these registers consist
of family operations, providing for a more bal-
anced income distribution. The main produc-
ing states are São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás,
Bahia,DistritoFederal,MatoGrosso,MatoGros-
sodoSulandTocantins.
According to the manager of Latinsem
Seed Imports and Exports, Adrian Belleggia,
fromthemeat supply chain viewpoint, forage
isthecheapestfoodforfeedingcattle,particu-
larly at times when this type of food is cheap,
as is the case in the first half of 2017. Despite
the differences in forage species, he recalls
that nowadays many investors are still facing
the competition frompiracy seed sellers, sold
without theminimumstandards of purity. “In
light of an inspection department unable to
carryoutitsworkproperly,becauseofthevast
territory of the Country, this translates into a
dramaforthecompanies”,heclarifies.
On the good news side, the agronom-
ic engineer recalls that, although the impor-
tance of the sector was discovered a little late,
for more than 10 years the hybridization pro-
cess has been in effect – difficult to get as we
are dealing with apomictic plants. In the time
of hybrids, seed technologies are determined
to revolutionize the menu of the herds, offer-
ingproductivematerials,resistanttopestsand
even specific for different situations. Belleggia
highlights the acknowledgment of the geneti-

to maximize their costs and earn good prof-
itmargins. He also advocates the need for the

production, once these credit lines do not ex-
ist nowadays, whilst engaging in a massive
campaign towards the use of good seed. For
pulverizing the market, this is a very difficult
challenge”, he says. It ishoped that theForest-
