Anuário Brasileiro de Sementes 2016 - page 14-15

Two states in South Brazil emerge as
references in the production of seeds. Rio
Grande do Sul, located at the Southern
end of the Country, and Paraná, produced
an amount of nearly 1.05 million tons, of a
diversity of species, in the 2014/15 growing
season. The numbers about the sector ap-
pear in the Inspection and Management Sys-
tem (Sigef ), of the Ministry of Agriculture,
Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa), and
in numbers released by the Brazilian Asso-

Among the relevant seed producers in the Country, outside the Southern region, Minas
Gerais, Mato Grosso and Goiás harvest more than 400 thousand tons, which strengthens
the strong demand in these states, with an exuberant and diversified agriculture. The
segment is equally on a rising trend in Bahia and Tocantins, in spite of the fact that the
North/Northeast region has recurrently been hit by severe drought conditions over the past
years, which also jeopardized the operations of the seed producers.
Mato Grosso, biggest soybean producer in Brazil, registers a crop of 437 thousand tons
in the Sigef system, but has released a production figure of 1.177 million tons, which
probably refers to rough seed, not processed. Anyway, 17 Brazilian states have adhered
to the Sigef seed production system, including a variety of species, confirming the vast
regionalization and dissemination of the supply chain in the Country.
ciation of Seeds and Seedlings (Abrasem).
With this regional performance, the South
plays a determining role in supplying the
demands at every growing season, and the
third state in the region, Santa Catarina,
produced an amount of 180 thousand tons.
In Rio Grande do Sul, the consistent
professionalization of the sector is a char-
acteristic visible to the entire Country and
the world. Not only the producers are pro-
fessionally-oriented in the market, the pro-
cessing and research departments are also
renowned for their highly professional sta-
tus. The State, for example, is home to the
Seed Promoting Foundation, in Passo Fun-
do, which, side by side with technical teams
from Embrapa and structures from the pri-
vate sector, promotes studies. Commercial
producers use their own Seed Processing
Facilities (UBS) and their Industrial Seed
Treatment (TIS) systems.
Currently, Rio Grande do Sul produces
seeds for 14 different crops, with the produc-
ers duly registered in Mapa’s National Seed
and Seedling Register (Renasem), which en-
sures total reliability in the numbers that are
released. For the 14 species, Renasem of-
ficials point to 458 producers. Without any
doubt, soybean is the leading crop in the pro-
duction of seeds, with 580 thousand tons in
the 2014/15 growing season, from an area of
190 thousand hectares. Wheat, a typical tem-
perate zone crop, comes second, with nearly
480 thousand tons and an area of 77.5 thou-
sand hectares. Rice, black oats and perennial
ryegrass come in the sequence, both in vol-
ume and planted area.
The flagships in Paraná, second biggest
seed producer in the Country (with a spe-
cific publication in this edition, on page 64)
are also soybean and wheat. At least, these
are the two species that attract the biggest at-
tention from the Paraná State Association of
Seed and Seedling Producers (Apasem).
