Anuário Brasileiro da Fruticultura 2018 - page 73

The good performance at home and
abroad, in 2017, is a cause for satisfaction for
the mango supply chain in Brazil. In the do-
mestic scenario, the commercialization of
this fruit soars every year, while shipments
abroadhitrecords,bothinvolumeandinrev-
enue. For 2018, the projection is for a new in-
crease in production, due to the satisfaction
of the growers with the results achieved in
the recent seasons. InSãoFranciscoValley, in

THE MOST FAMOUS
Mango is still the most exported fruit by Brazil. In 2017, shipments abroad hit a re-
cord, both involume, withabout 179 thousand tons, and revenue: inexcessof US$205
million. Compared to 2016, it represents a growth of 16.46% in weight and 13.99% in
value. The leading buyers of the national fruit area the European Union (132,820 tons,
with revenue of US$ 157.2 million) and the United States (33,095 tons and revenue of
US$ 30.6 million). One of the factors that possibly contributes towards this scenario
and makes Brazil different from other nations that produce mangoes is the fact that
theCountryproducesmangoes all year round. Researcher JoãoRicardoFerreira, from
Embrapa Semiarid, has it that the only thing the farmers have todo is to getmobilized
in order to improve even further the quality of the fruit produced in our land.
Lima, from Embrapa Semiarid, explains that
officially the latest consolidated data date
back to 2016. At that time, according to fig-
uresreleasedby theBrazilian Instituteof Ge-
ography and Statistics (IBGE), the planted
area in Brazil reached 61,842 hectares, with
aproductionof onemillion tons. Productivi-
ty reached 16.2 tons per hectare, with a pro-
duction value estimated at R$ 788.351 mil-
lion. Compared to the previous crop, there
was a slight decrease in the planted area
(in 2015, it was 64,263 hectares), but a big-
ger amount was produced, and the crop
amounted toa total of 976,012 tons in2015.
Though being produced in the entire na-
tional territory, Mango plantations are most-
ly concentrated in the Northeast. The big-
gest producer is Bahia, withaplantedareaof
21,370 hectares and a crop of 353,689 tons.
In 2016, according to IBGE sources, revenue
frommangoes raked in by Bahia reached R$
233.159 million. Pernambuco ranks second,
with 230,381 tons. Though being self-suffi-
cient incultivation, Lima insists that themain
difficulty faced by the farmers in São Francis-
co Valley is the commercialization of the fruit
right at the moment when the prices to be
fetchedby the farmers aredefined.
“Therearelotsofmangoproducers,poorly
organized, whilst there are only a small num-
ber of buyers. Another problem that causes
concern is the water crisis. Due to a reduc-
tion in the volume of water in Lake Sobradin-
ho during the year, there is need to save wa-
ter and, should this get more serious, water
reductions could affect the productivity of the
mango trees”, he explains. With regard to the
market, Lima believes that it will be quite fa-
vorable in 2018. “An improvement in the in-
dicators of the Brazilian economy is relevant
when it comes togood results in thedomestic
market, and the trend in the international sce-
narioisformoreexports”,heprojects.
