UPS AND DOWNS IN THE CROP
Over a17-year period, from2001 to2016, researcher JoséSouza, fromEmbrapaCas-
sava and Fruit Farming, detected “a rather irregular behavior in Brazilian fresh or dry
pineapple exports”, with a considerable drop in the volume shipped abroad (-16.32%a
year) and revenue brought in, -9.72% a year, notwithstanding the fact that the average
price continued on a rising trend (7.88% a year. The determining factors of the general
result include the planting of varieties not suitable for this purpose (Pérola and Smooth
Cayenne).In2017,Brazilianpineappleexportoperationsgotbackontrack,andthemain
buyers were the neighboring countries Argentina (82%) and Uruguay (13%), while the
major supplierswere the statesofMinasGerais, SãoPauloandParaná.
With regard to pineapple juice concentrate exports, from 2001 to 2017, Souza ob-
served “a rising trend in the price fetched by the product, at a rate of 6.43% a year”.
Nonetheless, the volume shipped abroad during the period dropped 2.9%, with ups
anddowns, where thehighlightswere 2015and2016, “which suggesteda rising trend,
but unfortunately did not hold through 2017”, when prices dropped considerably. In
2017, the biggest buyers were Chile, Argentina and Holland, while the leading export-
ers were the states of Pará (where Floresta do Araguaia is home to the biggest pineap-
ple juice concentrate industry inBrazil), Paraíba, Sergipe and Tocantins.
The states of Pará, in the North, and Paraíba, in the Northeast, have been taking
turns as leading national pineapple producers over the past 10 years, according to
the survey conducted by José Souza. From 2012 to 2016, Pará ranked first, with the
croppresent in81municipalities, where thehighlights are FlorestadoAraguaia (with
76.4%of the total) and Conceição do Araguaia (10.4%). In 2017, should IBGE’s initial
estimates confirm, the state of Paraíba, where the municipality of Itapororoca is the
outstanding player, andwhere there has been incentive to production, is likely to as-
sume the leadership in the production of the fruit.
The Pará State Secretariat of Agricultural Development and Fishery (Sedap),
however, did not agree with the preliminary ascertainment, seeking reevaluation
based on information from the State’s producing region, seeing that this informa-
tionwas not in linewith the projected drop. On the other hand, in 2016 and 2017, ru-
mor had it that it was difficult for the state to sell its production, mostly destined for
other states across the Country. Other states that equally stand out for their produc-
tion areMinas Gerais, Bahia and Amazonas (where Itacoatiara stands out), as well as
São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Tocantins, Rio Grande do Norte and Goiás.
