End-of-seasonripener:
is it worth it?
W
ith the return of the good
rains and warmer temper-
atures in early spring, sug-
arcane is resuming its veg-
etative growth, converting
its sugars into energy, thus weakening the
qualityoftherawmaterialthatissenttothein-
dustries. For minimizing this effect, the use of
end-of-season chemical ripeners has shown
excellent results, especially those that show
a quick response and selectivity towards the
crop, keeping the high content of sugar in the
plants, without any drastic reduction in pro-
ductivity and without interfering with the
sproutingprocessofthestumps.
Data obtained by Siqueira et al., 2014 (Fig-
ure 1), show that at 15 DAA the sugarcane Pol
in the controlling treatment suffered a drop
of around 10 percent, and at 30 DAA this de-
crease was rather sharp, reaching a drop of
13 percent. Meanwhile, for the area treated to
a ripener the drop reachedonly 3 and 3.8 per-
centintherespectiveperiods.
Fieldworkconductedinamillinthenorth-
eastregionoftheStateofSãoPaulo,inthepast
season, showed a drop of 11 kg ATR/ton in a
period of 28 days and accumulated precipita-
tion levels of 127 mm, while in the area treat-
ed to the Sprint WG ripener there was an in-
crease of 8 kg ATR/ton, with a final gain of 19
Kg ATR/ton. For end-of-season applications, it
isimportanttonotethattheplantsareinapo-
sitiontoreceivetheproduct,thatistosay,their
leaves should be photosynthetically active,
alongwithappropriatehumidity levels for the
absorption and assimilation of the product,
besides the necessary cautionat themoment
theproductisapplied.
