At the beginning of the new season,
Unica had detected a bigger destination
of cane for sugar, compared to the previ-
ous season, but did not disregard chang-
es, depending on the market of the deriv-
atives. Sugar prices in São Paulo had been
declining the previous year, reaching R$
61.18 per sack, in July 2017, the lowest
monthly average since October 2015. Re-
garding the drop that took place in June,
Flávia Machado Starling Soares, from
Conab, pointed to the influence coming
from the bigger local supply of the prod-
uct in the current season and the devalu-
ation of the foreignmarket in line with the
expectation for a bumper crop.
