A
n aerial view of the 9.05 million
hectares of sugarcane was tak-
en in the productive stage of the
crop in the2016/17growing sea-
son in Brazil, the biggest on re-
cord, according to a survey by the National
FoodSupplyAgency(Conab).Therewasa4.6
percent increase from the previous period,
due to the huge portion of the sugarcane left
unharvestedfromthepreviouscrop,andbig-
ger plantedarea insomeproductionunits.
Productivity, however, was influenced
by climate conditions, and dropped 4.6%,
remaining at 72,623 kg/ha. The average
productivity rate was seen as almost nor-
mal, seeing that in the previous year it had
reached record levels. Considering the two
factors, total production remained close to
the previous year, with a small decrease of
1.3 percent. A crop of 657 million tons of
sugarcane, with enhanced TRS (Total Re-
coverable Sugars), made it possible to ex-
tract 28.7million tons of sugar (up 15.5 per-
cent from the previous period, especially
due to more remunerative prices) as ascer-
tained by Conab officials.
While a bigger volume of sugar was pro-
duced, the biggest percentage of the sugar-
cane crop in Brazil was destined for the pro-
duction of ethanol (54.1%), without reaching
the levels of the previous year (59.6%). The
difference shrank a little because of the re-
duction in the production of hydrated etha-
nol (sold at the gas stations), by 13.1 percent,
by virtue of its decrease in consumption,
while the production of anhydrous ethanol
(mixed with common gasoline, whose sales
soared) remained close to the previous lev-
els,witha slight reductionof 1.2percent.
